Uruguay Ban on Vape Imports and Sales, Revokes Previous Policies
According to Infobae, Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi officially announced at a press conference that Uruguay will implement a comprehensive ban on the import, registration, and sale of vapes. This decision marks the revocation of two previous policy documents that had allowed the use of e-cigarettes, effectively closing the legal circulation channels for vape products in the local market.
Uruguayan Public Health Minister Cristina Lustemberg stated at the press event that research data from the Ministry of Health shows an average of 18 people die each day in Uruguay due to smoking-related illnesses. The introduction of this new policy is directly based on a re-evaluation of public health risks, which prompted the current government to abolish the previous administration’s regulations.
This ban covers not only traditional vapes but also heated tobacco products (HNB) and other types of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Notably, Uruguay became the first country in Latin America to implement a full smoking ban in enclosed public places on March 1, 2006. The current move to impose a full ban on newer tobacco alternatives reflects the country’s ongoing firm stance on tobacco control policies.
